Licensing

A license, and the royalty for the use.

DGI represents the rights holder. A license is commercial permission to use the right, and the royalty is the charge for that use. It is not a legal opinion, and it is not a promise that a product is free of someone else’s rights.

What we represent

We act for the holder of a right, and for the company that wants to use it. A conversation confirms whether that right fits the use, and what the royalty would be. The examples page shows the kinds of patents, designs, and trademarks this work covers. Titles and numbers only.

If nothing we represent fits the use you described, we say that. We do not dress up a mismatch as a license.

What we ask you to tell us

  • Who would use the right
  • What the product or activity is
  • Where it would be used
  • How long you need the permission

The royalty

Three ways a royalty can be written

A license uses one of these, or a combination written in the agreement. Amounts are set there. This site has no rate card.

Term royalty

One amount for permission during a stated period.

Annual royalty

An amount each year the license stays in force.

Per-use royalty

An amount tied to units made, sold, or another measure named in the agreement.

The writing

What the agreement names

Right
Which right the license covers.
Use
What the licensee may do with it, and what stays outside the permission.
Field
The product area, territory, or channel where the use is allowed.
Royalty
How the charge is calculated, and when it is due.
Term
When permission starts, when it ends, and that the use stops when the term stops.
  1. 01

    Describe the use

You tell us the product, the place, and the time you have in mind.

  2. 02

    We check the fit

We say whether a right we represent matches that use.

  3. 03

    The terms are written

The agreement names the use and the royalty. Questions of law go to your counsel.

  4. 04

    The term runs, then ends

Permission lasts for the term. When it ends, the use ends.

Ask whether a right fits.

Tell us the use you have in mind. We will say if there is a license and a royalty to discuss.
